Aerobic capacity is measured using a treadmill. The functional aerobic capacity compares the maximum number of minutes you are able to walk on a treadmill at increasing incline levels with the average for your age and sex, reported as a percentage. For example, a functional aerobic capacity of 120% means that you are 20% more fit than average. The VO2 max, or maximum rate of oxygen consumption measured during incremental exercise, is determined by analysing your ventilation rate and the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the air that you are breathing in and out while you walk or run on a treadmill.
